Based on my own childhood memories, this book was published by Scholastic Canada as part of their "Literacy Place for the Early Years" grade three guided reading program. As a little girl in Finland, I sometimes went fishing with my ukki, a man of very few words. An old man, he didn't have much patience for children's shanannigans in a rowboat, and I was constantly reminded to sit still, not yank my fishing pole around and, above all, stop my incessant chattering. Very difficult for a lively child of seven or eight! He did, however, humour me by trading fishing poles with me when I insisted mine wasn't "working" as well as his.
In the story, Holly's grandfather is portrayed as being more child-friendly than my ukki was. He even possesses a vivid imagination - something I don't think my ukki ever had.
The book has beautiful, full-colour illustrations by Jamies Bentley and is recommended for ages 5 to 9.
